The Constructivist View of Communication
Ernst von Glasersfeld

How does a listener or reader come to ascribe meaning to the sounds he or she calls words? From where comes the repertoire of meanings which we attribute to words? How do variations in experience and intentions among participants affect the effectivity of communication? When a listener or reader determines the meaning of an utterance how is this meaning related to the experience of the speaker or writer? How are the answers to these questions related to interactions in a community of practice?

Community Interactions and the Logic of Experience
Marco Bettoni

What are the problems challenging communities in everyday interactions? How could a radical constructivist theory of knowledge shed new light on these interactions? And what measures of success would help balance humanity and efficiency in the business world? In this article Marco Bettoni develops an unexplored connection between constructivist knowledge theory and successful community interactions. He gives seven practical recommendations for optimizing community interactions where human factors are the guiding principle.

A Logic of Argumentation for Communities of Practice
Bernhard von Guretzky

The goal of this paper is to introduce the old buddhist logic of the four alternatives as an argumentative aid in Communities of Practice. In such knowledge communities individual members will put forward their respective view of reality, which is in general different from that of the other members. It is therefore necessary to become aware of the argumentative basis of the individual in order to be able to acknowledge her contribution also as a community outcome. In this context it will be proposed to consider this logic of the four alternatives as a "natural" logic of Radical Constructivism.

Tribal Marketing and ICT: Post-modern Communities go online
Armando Cirrincione and Laura Anna Ripamonti

Post-modernity is characterized by a progressive shifting from the exasperated individualism generated by the liberation movements and rationalism of the modern period. At least two forces are clearly dominating the scene of the change: a strong, diffused commitment toward the re-composition of a fragmented society, and a general collapse of the reality – that becomes more and more only illusion and image. This implies, on one hand, the rise of a new kind of “tribes” or communities and, on the other, an increasing power of the hyper-reality. Consequences of this silent revolution should no longer be underestimated, since they are producing new business models and they call for an innovative approach both to the organization and to the relation with the market. We will give hints on these issues and their interplay by offering insights on an empirical case study.

Integration of migrant communities from a constructivist point of view
Michael Veith

In this proposal I will present to you some ideas about the integration of migrant communities from a constructivist point of view. In the first half of this paper I will elaborate some theoretical considerations which deal with the terms integration, learning, Community of Practice (CoP), and - as I call it – the Communities and Technologies dilemma, which emphasizes existing challenges in the introduction of novel technology in communities. In the second half of this proposal I will introduce a hands-on project which understands integration as learning in an integrative mixed-cultural CoP. To sum up I will provide some questions to you, which should be interesting talking about in the workshop and shall function as a starting point for a further discussion.

The relationship between Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)
and Communities of Practice: Eurocontrol Experimental Center case study
Manel Jouirou

The aim of this article is to identify the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in Communities of Practice (CoPs) at Eurocontrol Experimental Centre (EEC). Identification of the role of ICTs provides a basis for reflection for studying factors which might influence the way in which knowledge management (KM) projects are conducted within companies, and the choice of technology factor is justified by the desire to situate it in relation to the human and social factor, which are considered essential to the promotion of a knowledge-sharing culture.
